The 1st International Conference on Forest and Water in a Changing Environment was held in September 2006 at the Chinese Academy of Forestry in Beijing, China. Over 90 scientists from 25 countries attended this inaugural conference. Resulting directly from this conference, a total of 11 papers focusing on China’s forest hydrology research were published in the Journal of the American Water Resources Association in an October 2008 special issue. This meeting decided to rotate the conference every three years to address emerging issues in forest water sciences.

A total of 11 papers focusing on China’s forest hydrology research were published in the Journal of the American Water Resources Association.

This conference resulted in the following common visions:

  • Though many questions remain unanswered, we currently know enough about the interactions between forests and water to help make informed decisions
  • Ecohydrologic science has tremendous value for maintaining, restoring, and enhancing water quality and supply
  • New science needs to be a strategic blend of basic, applied, and application tools
  • There is a continued need for long-term paired watershed studies and monitoring

This conference identified the following research directions:

  • Better understanding of ecohydrologic processes at multiple scales
  • Better integrated models to predict consequences of multiple stessors
  • Better information for policy makers, land managers, and society
