International Experts to Develop Global Assessment of Forests and Water

International experts at the IUFRO scoping meetingThough the topic of forests and water has been researched extensively, there is no assessment or synthesis of this information at the global scale. Eastern Threat Center research ecologist Steve McNulty recently participated in a scoping meeting in Rome, Italy, sponsored by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) as part of a Global Forest Expert Panel tasked with the initial planning of such a report. Following the meeting, McNulty accepted an invitation to serve on another Expert Panel of up to 30 internationally recognized scientists specializing in forest and water research who will meet several times over the next 16 months to develop an assessment on global forest capacity for supplying water resources. The findings will likely serve as background information for discussions and briefing documents for negotiators from the United Nations and other organizations involved in multilateral environmental agreements. The information will also support the needs of other scientists, communicators, and teachers.
