StoryMap helps producers prepare for and recover from hurricanes

StoryMaps are effective tools for communicating technical guidance and information to a wide audience. The USDA Southeast Climate Hub has published a StoryMap highlighting how producers can build resilience to, prepare for, and recover from hurricane impacts. The StoryMap includes video guidance and links that allow producers to get more in-depth guidance and connect with their appropriate Federal, State, and local experts.

Each year hurricanes cause billions of dollars in agricultural and forestry losses, and these losses grow as climate change continues to drive more severe hurricane seasons. Forest landowners and farmers need to minimize their losses and reduce their post-hurricane recovery time to remain profitable. Building on the successful completion of hurricane preparation and recovery guides for 23 economically important agricultural and forest commodities in the Southeast U.S., the USDA Southeast Climate Hub published a StoryMap to summarize the key points from the guides and encourage producers to learn more. The StoryMap provides a concise overview of hurricane preparation and recovery guidance, along with helpful recovery assistance videos, and links to get more in-depth guidance and assistance. This work aligns with USDA Strategic Goal 1.2 to lead efforts to adapt to the consequences of climate change in agriculture and forestry, and goes the extra mile to provide timely information on a widely available public platform.
