SPB Landscape Visualizations

Researchers generated 3D landscape visualizations to compare landscape patterns before, during, and after the southern pine beetle (SPB) infestation in Clemson Experiment Forest. These images are based on historical aerial orthophotos, including infrared photos from 1999 and 2006 and real color photos from 2002, as well as stand inventory data from Clemson Experimental Forest.

During the SPB infestation, 2002After the SPB infestation, 2002.
At least two outbreaks of SPB spots occurred on these pine forest stands. Great parts of these pine stands were attacked (shown as red and fading tree images) and turned into killed trees (shown as grey tree images).

Most of the trees attacked in 2002 were gone and replaced by regeneration shrubs, herbs, and secondary pine sprouts.
