2013 Partnership Highlights

Advanced Technology Supports Integrated Threat Assessment Tools
University collaboration aids national-scale forest monitoring, management, and decision making

NEMAC.jpgThe collaboration between the Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center and the University of North Carolina Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) supports Center activities by developing advanced tools and technologies that support integrated threat assessments for a variety of audiences. Eastern Threat Center and NEMAC staffs partner to develop database systems, software applications, and technology transfer strategies needed to address current and emerging threats to forest health.

In 2012, the Eastern Threat Center, NEMAC, and other partners released ForWarn, a satellite-based forest change detection and tracking system. Collaborators developed the web-based Forest Change Assessment Viewer which provides weekly national forest disturbance maps and is a critical component of the ForWarn system. Additionally, collaborators created an online portal to the Assessment Viewer, supporting datasets, and training resources. Learn more about ForWarn and access the Assessment Viewer at http://www.forwarn.forestthreats.org.

The collaboration also advanced the application of the Comparative Risk Assessment Framework and Tools (CRAFT) to support development of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy. The Eastern Threat Center and NEMAC developed CRAFT to help natural resource managers address uncertainties inherent in land management decisions. Collaborating staff members work with intergovernmental committees in the CRAFT process to help them identify and evaluate alternative courses of action. NEMAC also provides technological support to make information and data assembled during the Cohesive Strategy planning effort accessible to all interested parties.
