2014 Partnership Highlights
Advanced Technology Supports Integrated Threat Assessment Tools
The collaboration between the Eastern Threat Center and the University of North Carolina Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) provides advanced tools and technologies that support integrated threat assessments for a variety of audiences. Eastern Threat Center and NEMAC staffs partner to develop database systems, software applications, and technology transfer strategies needed to address current and emerging threats to forest health.
The Eastern Threat Center, NEMAC, and other partners released ForWarn, a satellite-based forest change detection and tracking system. Collaborators developed the web-based Forest Change Assessment Viewer which provides weekly national forest disturbance maps and is a critical component of the ForWarn system. Additionally, collaborators created an online portal to the Assessment Viewer, supporting datasets, and training resources.
The collaboration also advanced the application of the Comparative Risk Assessment Framework and Tools (CRAFT) to support development of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy. The Eastern Threat Center and NEMAC developed CRAFT to help natural resource managers address uncertainties inherent in land management decisions. NEMAC provides technological support to make information and data assembled during the Cohesive Strategy planning effort accessible to all interested parties. NEMAC programmers are also working with Eastern Threat Center staff to improve the functionality and reliability of the Template for Assessing Climate Change Impacts and Management Options (TACCIMO) decision support system.
