TACCIMO Development Team Honored with Regional Forester’s Honor Award
Technology to support resource management decisions in a changing climate

award.pngClimate change is an enormously complex problem with implications spanning multiple resource areas and geographic scales. The body of knowledge on climate change is rapidly growing, with better understanding of impacts and management options coming every day. The confluence of this multi-discipline, multi-scale, and rapidly changing problem necessitates the development of new technology to support information needs during the resource management and planning decision making process.

When it comes to developing new technology, no substitute exists for involving users from the very beginning. They, better than anyone, know what is needed to get their job done and what is required to do it better. To this end, forest planners from the Southern Region partnered with EFETAC researchers to develop the web-based Template for Assessing Climate Change Impacts and Management Options (TACCIMO). The iterative and interactive development process deployed a targeted, efficient, and effective tool that was first applied in support of the George Washington National Forest (Region 8) revision earlier this year. While development is still underway, the team was recently recognized for a “model interaction” between research and management with the Regional Forester’s Award for Technology Transfer.
