2012 Partnership Highlights

Advanced Technology Supports Integrated Threat Assessment Tools
University collaboration aids national-scale forest monitoring, management, and decision making

CRAFT_workshop.jpgThe collaboration between the Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center (EFETAC) and the University of North Carolina Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) supports Center activities by developing advanced tools and technologies that support integrated threat assessments for a variety of audiences. EFETAC and NEMAC staffs partner to develop database systems, software applications, and technology transfer strategies needed to address current and emerging threats to forest health.

In 2012, EFETAC, NEMAC, and other partners released ForWarn, a satellite-based forest change detection and tracking system. EFETAC-NEMAC collaborators developed the web-based Forest Change Assessment Viewer which provides weekly national forest disturbance maps and is a critical component of the ForWarn system. Additionally, collaborators created an online portal to the Assessment Viewer, supporting datasets, and training resources. Learn more about ForWarn and access the Assessment Viewer at http://www.forwarn.forestthreats.org.

The EFETAC-NEMAC collaboration also advanced the application of Comparative Risk Assessment Framework and Tools (CRAFT) to support development of the National Wildfire Management Cohesive Strategy. EFETAC and NEMAC developed CRAFT to help natural resource managers address uncertainties inherent in land management decisions. EFETAC and NEMAC staff members are engaging regional strategy committees in the CRAFT process to help them evaluate the relative consequences of alternative courses of action. This process is providing important information to guide the national strategy for managing wildfire across all lands.
